Man charged with attempted murder in stabbing of 11-year-old girl in a London tourism hot spot

  • AP

A man accused of stabbing an 11-year-old girl in London’s bustling theater district has been charged with attempted murder. Prosecutors say the man put the girl in a headlock and stabbed her eight times. The girl was seriously wounded. The 32-year-old Romanian citizen was held after appearing Tuesday in Westminster Magistrates' Court. The girl's mother was initially believed to be injured in the attack because she was covered in her daughter's blood. Police say there is no suggestion the attack was terror-related and officers don't believe the suspect knew the victim. Police thanked a shop employee and bystanders for stopping the attack.

The Latest: Harris begins policy rollout; material from Trump campaign leaked to news outlets

  • By The Associated Press

Vice President Kamala Harris is trying to outmaneuver former President Donald Trump and address old vulnerabilities on her policy positions as she starts to fill in how she would govern if elected in November. Vice presidents rarely have policy portfolios of their own. Now, after four years of following President Joe Biden’s lead, Harris is taking a cautious approach to unveiling a policy vision in her own right. Meanwhile, at least three news outlets were leaked confidential material from inside the Trump campaign, including its report vetting JD Vance as a vice presidential candidate. So far, each has refused to reveal any details about what they received.

Russia intensifies attacks in eastern Ukraine as it fights against Kyiv's cross-border incursion

  • By ILLIA NOVIKOV - Associated Press

The Ukrainian military says the Russian army is intensifying its attacks in eastern Ukraine, even as the Kremlin’s forces try to check a stunning weeklong incursion into Russia by Kyiv’s troops. Ukraine’s General Staff said Tuesday that over the previous 24 hours Russian troops launched 52 assaults in the area of Pokrovsk, a town in Ukraine’s Donetsk region that is close to the front line. That’s roughly double the number of daily attacks there a week ago. The Ukrainian military claims its sensational charge onto Russian soil has already encompassed some 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) of Russian territory. The operation's goals are a closely-guarded military secret.

The sheriff's office says it has surveillance video that shows a suspect wearing dark clothing with a dark cap and carrying a backpack. It isn't clear whether anything was stolen, but an investigation continues. The campaign and the Republican committee have not commented.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom nudges school districts to restrict student cellphone use

  • By SOPHIE AUSTIN - Associated Press/Report for America

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is sending letters to school districts, urging them to restrict smartphone use on campuses. In South Carolina, education officials are expected to approve guidelines to restrict student phone use. The efforts are part of a broader push by states across the country to address digital distractions in the classroom and the impacts of social media on the mental health of teens. Cellphone bans are already in place at many schools but are not always enforced. The issue has garnered renewed attention after the U.S. surgeon general called on Congress to require warning labels on social media platforms that address mental health risks for young people.

Israeli strikes on Gaza leave children without parents and parents without children

  • By WAFAA SHURAFA and SAMY MAGDY - Associated Press

A 3-month-old infant was the only member of her family to survive an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip late Monday. A few miles (kilometers) to the north, a man lost his wife and their twin newborns in another strike. More than 10 months into its war with Hamas, Israel’s relentless bombardment of the isolated territory has wiped out extended Palestinian families. It has left parents without children and children without parents, brothers or sisters. And some of the sole survivors are so young they will have no memory of those they lost.

Public spat highlights cracks in Netanyahu's coalition as Israel braces for feared Iran attack

  • AP

Cracks are widening in a public tiff between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defense minister. The latest spat shows growing discontent with Netanyahu’s handling of the war at a sensitive time. Israel is bracing for Iranian retaliation after a blast in Tehran killed Hamas’ leader. Iran blames that attack on Israel. And a new round of cease-fire negotiations between Israel and Hamas is set to begin later this week. Israeli media reported Monday that Defense Minister Yoav Gallant condemned Netanyahu’s “nonsense about ‘total victory.’” That's a phrase the prime minister has repeated during the 10-month-old war in Gaza. The comments were apparently made during a closed-door parliamentary hearing.

Ed Sheeran's favorite team Ipswich among promoted trio looking to survive in the Premier League

  • By STEVE DOUGLAS - AP Sports Writer

Leicester, Southampton and Ipswich are the three promoted teams in the Premier League this season and all are big names in their own right as they return to the English top flight. Leicester delivered an underdog story for the ages in winning the title against all the odds in 2016 and is back after a season's absence. Southampton was also away for only one season after being a mainstay in the league for 11 years on the back of its famous conveyor belt of young talent. Ipswich is Ed Sheeran's local team and its back story in England’s top division is from pretty much a generation ago having last been there in 2002.

Will the attacks on Walz's military service stick like they did to Kerry 20 years ago?

  • By DAN MERICA - Associated Press

To some Democratic Party strategists, last week felt like déjà vu. Donald Trump’s presidential campaign was aggressively questioning aspects of the Democratic vice presidential nominee’s military service — attacks that were reminiscent of charges leveled two decades earlier on Sen. John Kerry shortly after he became the party’s presidential pick. The comparisons end there, however. The onslaught on Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and that on Kerry actually highlight how much campaigning has evolved over 20 years and the media environment has changed — in ways that appear to diminish the effectiveness of assailing such aspects of a candidate’s biography. “It is a very different world,” said Tad Devine, a senior adviser to Kerry’s 2004 campaign.

A murder charge has been filed against former Bangladesh premier Sheikh Hasina over a grocer's death

  • By JULHAS ALAM - Associated Press

Authorities in Bangladesh say a murder charge has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other officials over the killing of a grocery shop owner during student protests in July. S.M. Amir Hamza, described as a “well-wisher” of grocery store owner Abu Sayeed, filed the case at the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury on Tuesday. Hamza said Sayeed was killed on July 19 amid clashes during the student-led uprising, and that he filed the case because Sayeed’s family did not have the capacity to seek justice. Hasina, who stepped down and fled the country on Aug. 5, was named as a suspect in the petition along six other people including former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and top police officials.

Man who died flying a helicopter that crashed on Cairns hotel roof had not flown in Australia before

  • By CHARLOTTE GRAHAM-McLAY - Associated Press

A man who died when the helicopter he was flying crashed onto a hotel roof in Queensland, Australia, was an employee of the aviation company that owned the aircraft but didn't work as a pilot and hadn't flown in Australia before. Nautilus Aviation said Tuesday he was a member of its ground crew, and while he held a helicopter pilot’s license in New Zealand he wasn't authorized to fly the company's helicopters. About 400 people were evacuated from the DoubleTree Hilton in the far north Queensland city of Cairns on Monday when the helicopter hit the roof.

Yemen’s Houthis seized UN rights office in Sanaa, UN official says

  • BY SAMY MAGDY - Associated Press

A senior U.N. official says Yemen’s Houthi rebels have stormed the headquarters of the U.N. Human Rights Office in the capital, Sanaa. U.N. Human Rights Chief Volker Türk said Tuesday the rebels took over the Office's premises in Sanaa on Aug. 3, after forcing U.N. Yemeni workers to hand over belongings, including documents, furniture and vehicles. A spokesman for the Houthis didn’t return phone calls and messages requesting comment. The seizure was the latest move in a crackdown by the Houthis on people working with the U.N., aid agencies and foreign embassies. The crackdown comes as the Iranian-backed rebels have been targeting shipping throughout the Red Sea corridor over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.

Pakistani, Afghan Taliban forces trade fire at Torkham border crossing, killing 3 Afghan civilians

  • By RAHIM FAIEZ - Associated Press

Officials say Pakistani and Afghan Taliban forces have traded cross-border fire near a key northwestern crossing, killing a woman and two children on the Afghan side. There was no immediate word on casualties on the Pakistani side of the Torkham border which was shut, disrupting trade and movement of people between the two countries. Torkham, a key border crossing, is located in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. In Kabul, Abdul Mateen Qani, a spokesman for Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry, said the clash took place Monday and accused Pakistani forces of targeting civilians. It was unclear who initiated the attack, though such cross-border fire is common along the Afghan-Pakistan border.

Israel-Hamas war latest: Iran rejects European leaders' call to refrain from any retaliatory attacks

  • By The Associated Press

Iran has rejected a call by three European countries demanding it to refrain from any retaliatory attacks that would further escalate regional tensions. French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a joint statement Monday endorsing the latest push by mediators to broker an agreement to end the Israel-Hamas war. The European leaders called for the return of scores of hostages held by Hamas and the “unfettered” delivery of humanitarian aid. They also asked that Iran and its allies to refrain from retaliation that would further escalate regional tensions after the late-July killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
